The Maiden Speaks
The random word of the day is SPEECH
At President Jack Kellerman’s inauguration ball, the spotlight falls on Mila Marlowe. The sensual actress, shimmering in skin-tight sequins, holds the microphone close to her ruby lips. Her magnetism captures everyone’s gaze and a hush falls over the room.
She playfully taps the microphone, but instead of the prepared welcome speech, she breaks into a sultry serenade, the husky words designed to tease the receptive, grinning president.
As applause mingles with murmurs, an old senator grumbles to his neighbor, “That’s not a maiden speech — that’s a brazen hussy of a speech.”
At the head table, the First Lady faints…..
Inspired by Winston Churchill’s remark upon encountering A. P. Herbert after his maiden speech in the House of Commons.
A Drabble is a work of fiction that is exactly 100 words. No More. No Less.
