Discover the wholesome simplicity and rustic charm of Traditional Irish Soda Bread, a timeless staple that brings a taste of Ireland right into your kitchen.
Start by pre-heating your oven to 210°C/425°F/Gas 7. Place a 19cm/8" non-stick deep cake tin into the oven and leave it to get really hot while you mix the ingredients — putting the dough into a piping hot tin ensures a great crust on the bread and prevents the dough from sticking.
Ingredients
- 200g/7 oz Plain Flour
- 250g/9 oz Coarse Wholemeal Flour
- 1 teaspoon Bread Soda
- 1 teaspoon Baking Powder
- 1 level teaspoon Salt
- 1 tablespoons Oat Bran
- 1 tablespoon Wheat Germ
- 25g/1 oz Butter or Margarine
- 1 teaspoon Honey
- 1 Egg, beaten
- 12–14fl oz / 350–400ml Buttermilk
Method
- Sieve the cream flour, salt, baking powder and bread soda into a bowl.
- Add the wholemeal, oat bran and wheat germ and mix well.
